According to the American Psychological Association (APA), almost 3 in 5 employees reported lack of interest, motivation, or energy due to work-related stress. Many people discount this stress as an accepted part of life, not realizing that they may be suffering from burnout.</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The physical traits of burnout are broad, similar to stress and other ailments. Common symptoms may include headaches, stomach discomfort, fatigue, changes in appetite, and little to no sleep. Emotional symptoms may involve a lack of motivation, feeling detached, and a sense of helplessness. In this blog, we will go over various causes of burnout and talk about solutions to overcome it.</span></p>
</div></div></div><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-2"><h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px">Signs and Symptoms of Burnout</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stress and burnout have numerous similarities, but it&#8217;s important to distinguish between the two. Stress primarily affects the body physically, whereas burnout is more emotionally driven. It&#8217;s important to note that stress can lead to burnout. Over-engagement can give rise to stress, which, if left unchecked, can evolve into disengagement, resulting in burnout. Difficulty starting your workday and maintaining focus, or constantly saying &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to work today, &#8220;can be early signs of burnout. Similarly, if you find yourself struggling to start tasks or consistently lacking concentration, these could also be signs of burnout.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Changes in sleep patterns and low energy levels are also signs to look out for. While occasional fatigue is normal, chronic exhaustion throughout the day may be a sign of burnout. Unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach issues can be triggered by workplace stress, potentially leading to burnout. </span></p>
</div></div></div><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-3"><h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px">Causes of Burnout</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Burnout can be attributed to several job-related factors, including a lack of control. When faced with an overwhelming workload and unrealistic deadlines, your energy can quickly be used up. A chaotic work environment and a lack of recognition for your efforts can be equally draining and make you lose motivation. Additionally, a major contributor to burnout is an unhealthy work-life balance. A balance between work and personal life is essential for your overall well-being. A healthy work-life balance can enhance productivity, reduce the likelihood of falling ill, and improve time management. </span></p>
</div></div></div><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4"><h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px">How to Overcome &amp; Prevent Burnout</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first step in overcoming burnout is acknowledging that solutions exist for these problems. Many of these solutions resemble those for managing stress: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engaging in relaxing hobbies or activities away from work. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or family members. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prioritizing sufficient sleep and regular exercise is crucial, though it may not be easy to initiate such changes. </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Think of it as a lifestyle adjustment rather than a quick fix.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Start small by taking short walks, eliminating unhealthy food choices such as soda (something small but easy), and gradually adjusting your bedtime. Reducing screen time, especially before sleep, can also help in creating a healthier routine.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engaging in hobbies and activities that provide separation from work is a key strategy. It&#8217;s essential to carve out dedicated personal time. This separation can significantly reduce stress levels and, in turn, mitigate burnout. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Seeking social support is another effective means of preventing burnout. Talking about your issues can be surprisingly helpful. Having these conversations/outlets helps you gain perspective (especially when you hear yourself speaking out loud) and may even lead to solutions right away. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s helpful to discuss concerns with your coworkers because they more than likely have experienced what you’re going through at some point. However, it&#8217;s important to choose someone you can trust and remain professional. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At DBE, we are proactive about preventing burnout. Below are some of the ways we do that–maybe these can work for your team too:</span></p>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Flexible 9-5</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Our team generally starts and ends around 9am-5pm ET. Employees can start a little earlier or later depending on the day.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Quick Errands</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Appointments don’t count against PTO, as long as the time is made up.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Breaks</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Our CEO, Niki Fielding, encourages employees to take lunch and walking breaks.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>3 o’clock Fridays</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – We started 3 o’clock Fridays one summer and never changed back. As long as your work is finished, you can head off to enjoy the weekend a little early.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Zoomraderies</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; These are our weekly teambuilders – they range from guessing each other’s favorite hobby to cookie decorating. Learn more about these wonderfully fun ventures here.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Birthdays Off</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – This is our favorite way to show appreciation to team members.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Wellness Reimbursements</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – We use this to allow and encourage team members to stay active and healthy. It’s separate from our health insurance plan and each of us gets up to $500 per year reimbursed for activities that get us moving. Pool membership, new bike, tennis lessons–they are all reimbursable.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Weekly Touch Bases with your Manager</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – This helps to make sure all team members get the opportunity to be heard and acknowledged. Here, you can have honest conversations about workload and any factors that may be affecting you</span></li>
</ul>
</div></div></div><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-5"><h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px">Why Are We Sharing?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We are sharing because it’s not only important for yourself to understand signs and symptoms of burnout, but it’s also important that you understand it for your colleagues. If you’re able to see the early signs of burnout that a coworker may be experiencing, you can find ways to help them reduce the factors causing them stress. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Avoiding burnout in the workplace keeps productivity high, fatigue low, improves communication and flow, reduces turnover, and generally makes for happier, healthier employees.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hello? Can you hear me now? We all remember those iconic &#8220;Can You Hear Me Now?&#8221; Verizon commercials from the 2000s. While it may not be as relevant now with 5G in places you didn&#8217;t know existed, it is increasingly important in the remote workplace. </span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/509759/remote-workers-organizations-drifting-apart.aspx"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gallup survey results</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> report that only 28% of remote employees feel connected to their company&#8217;s mission, which is a record low since 2011. When employees aren’t connected to each other, it can lead to the job feeling “gig-like”, and potentially lead to less loyalty to the company, as Gallup states. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We&#8217;ve found ways to jump these blaring WFH hurdles. We’ve got 9 strategies to stay in contact while miles apart. See if any work for your team!</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">How DBE Stays Connected</span></h2>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Email Sign-on and Sign-offs</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Every team member emails when they are online and offline. In addition to saying hello in the morning, we let each other know about errands or breaks away from the desk. This method helps acknowledge breaks and maintain better work/life balance.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Two Weekly Scheduled Team Meetings</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Not only do we run through client/project statuses, but update each other on what’s going on outside of work. The first 15 minutes of these calls are normally spent catching up with each other.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>One-on-One Connect Meetings</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Team members will often schedule one-on-ones when working together.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>In-Person Lunches &amp; Get-Togethers</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Sometimes these are with the whole team. Other times, a smaller group will get together.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Share What’s New</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: When there’s something exciting going on, we’ll share it. We’ve shared vacation pictures and even brought puppies on camera for our status calls!</span></li>
</ol>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tools to Stay in Touch</span></h2>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.kumospace.com/virtual-office"><b>Kumospace</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: We use this free, virtual office for our Zoomraderies. Zoomraderies are our weekly non-work meetings used to get to know each other better. We use Kumospace for a specific type of Zoomraderie. A theme is chosen (i.e., “What’s your favorite comfort food?” or “What’s your favorite card game?”). Each team member changes their profile picture and name to their answer. Then, we take turns guessing who’s who via the chat. Kumospace can also be used to virtually work together in a conference room. You can screen share, chat, and even take a game break!</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-whiteboard/digital-whiteboard-app"><b>Whiteboard</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: We use Microsoft Whiteboard for monthly shout-out boards, birthdays, and anniversaries. Each team member contributes on virtual sticky notes, leaving positive notes to other employees. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.skype.com/en/"><b>Skype</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: There are always a few impromptu meetings and chats throughout the day! It’s a quick way to get in touch with each other.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.kumospace.com/virtual-office"><b>Zoom</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: This is another great place for team meetings. We prefer Zoom for screen sharing and recording meetings. Everyone is encouraged to appear on camera.</span></li>
</ol>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Getting Connected and Staying Connected</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just like when old friends get together for the first time in forever, they say, “Let’s do this more often” and the thought disappears amidst the business of life,… the way to get better at staying connected takes dedication (and strategic scheduling). Yes, sometimes things pop-up, things get rescheduled, but don’t let that deter you. Keep getting back up and trying it again. It took us a while before we found our stride, but now we’re grateful for the connection we have with our team.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">P.S. To answer the intro question, yes, we can hear each other now.</span></p>

For most people, this goes away quickly once they find footing in their new workplace.</p>
<p>However, for some people this feeling of being ‘the rookie&#8217; may never leave them. Even after finding success in their role, they may still feel incapable of performing their role and believe they are in over their head. Even after receiving praise for their professional accomplishments, they may feel it is inaccurate or undeserved. This feeling of unrelenting self-doubt is popularly known as <em>imposter syndrome</em>.</p>
<p>Imposter syndrome is defined as “<em>a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success” </em>by <em><a href="https://hbr.org/2008/05/overcoming-imposter-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Harvard Business Review</a></em><em>. </em>Those affected may wonder why this occurs and, more importantly, how these feelings can be lessened or overcome completely.</p>

<p class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 26; line-height: 1.4;" data-fontsize="26" data-lineheight="36.4px"><strong>There are many reasons why someone may experience imposter syndrome.</strong></p>
<p>Researchers believe imposter syndrome can come from different areas of life.</p>
<p>A major one is that people experiencing imposter syndrome already suffer from anxiety. “<em>Imposter syndrome is frequently associated with trait anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and social anxiety disorder. I don’t see a lot of people with imposter syndrome who don’t have anxiety,” </em>explains psychologist and academic director Audrey Ervin. Individuals who suffer from existing anxiety are more likely to suffer from imposter syndrome than those without.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wellandgood.com/imposter-syndrome-perfectionism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Perfectionism</a> is another common symptom seen in people with imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome and perfectionism can go hand in hand. Someone new in a position may feel like a failure because they are setting high standards for performance. When they do not meet those standards, they see themselves as a failure.</p>
<p>Another factor with people that have imposter syndrome is associating success or achievements with luck. Gill Corkindale explains in his article, <em>Overcoming Imposter Syndrome</em>, “<em>The tendency to attribute success to luck or to other external reasons and not their abilities is a clear indicator of imposter syndrome. They may typically say or think: “I just got lucky” or “it was a fluke”. Often this masks the fear that they will not be able to succeed the next time</em>.” Essentially, those suffering from imposter syndrome feel unable to take credit for their own success, making it difficult to find joy or motivation in their work.</p>
</div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-5 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap" style="max-width:1372.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% / 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% / 2 );"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-9 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-10" style="--awb-text-transform:none;"><h3>The How</h3>
<p><strong>How does someone overcome imposter syndrome?</strong></p>
<p>There are many ways people can overcome imposter syndrome. One of the major steps is recognizing when these negative feelings emerge and reframe your thinking. No one is going to know everything in their job when they first start out, so it’s important that they do not get discouraged when struggling to understand certain aspects of their job.</p>
<p>It is also important that individuals reach out for help from family, friends, or even professionals if needed. Outside guidance may give a new perspective and help with overcoming feelings of self-doubt.</p>
<p>Embracing success and showing self-compassion are other ways to navigate feeling like you’re faking it. Celebrating your successes, even small ones, can be pivotal in boosting self confidence. Each day or week, list every success and explain to yourself how and why you succeeded, instead of brushing it off as luck. As Alexandra Owens, in her article for <a href="https://www.psycom.net/imposter-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Psycom.net</a>, explains,<em> “Over time, this practice will give you a realistic picture of your accomplishments and help affirm your self-worth</em>.”</p>
<p>Another way you can help yourself overcome imposter syndrome is taking Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. MBCT helps people reflect on their feelings and foster more compassionate, constructive ways of relating to themselves. It has become a popular approach to help manage symptoms of imposter syndrome.</p>
</div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-6 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap" style="max-width:1372.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% / 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% / 2 );"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-10 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:20px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-11" style="--awb-text-transform:none;"><h3>The Hope</h3>
<p><strong>Why are we sharing this?</strong></p>
<p>This information is important to know for employees at any level, from a new-hire to a CEO. When onboarding new employees, this context can help you remain compassionate if you notice them struggling. When starting in a new role, this can help you remain mindful of how you perceive yourself and your work. Having a workplace that is aware of this phenomenon and works together to ensure all employees feel confident and appreciated, will establish a solid foundation in which all members can thrive.</p>

<p>So, it’s really truly almost the end of August. I know many of our southern readers have kiddos back to school already. Here in the Princeton, NJ area, we’re looking at a week after Labor Day return. Not that it affects me these days, my two are all grown and impressing me regularly with what they’re doing with their lives—I’m at the point in my life where I get to applaud from the sidelines.</p>
<p>And speaking of back to school, do you know a teacher who could use a little help with their classroom purchases? Have you thought about asking a teacher what might be on their wish list and then sending them the $ to make the purchase? It’s an easy way to say, “I see you, and thanks” and the amount you chose is entirely up to you.</p>
<p>Now, on to the show…. This week’s items I thought you might find insightful, enjoyable, and/or concerning (but worth noting) are here:</p>
<p>First, a bit of inspiration from Jim Kwik via Instagram (@JimKwik):</p>

<li>This piece from Business Insider (paywall) talks about research showing younger employees no longer feel as connected to work because they aren’t making the same “friends at work” connections that were integral to people when most of us worked in offices. <li>A group of teenagers are suspected of attacking boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal. Experts believe it’s the same kids doing the damage in all areas. Why am I sharing this? <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/08/20/1117993583/orcas-attacks-spain-portugal-killer-whales" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Click</a> to find out.</li>
<li>Hopefully that last one gave you a chuckle…or if you’re a boater, sorry about that… This one talks about why you need to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/ChStXnuJ1cZ/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">get outta’ the house</a>.</li>
<li>There’s new thinking about hiring back good employees who left your company for other opportunities. They’re called boomerangs, and the latest is they are definitely <a href="https://chief.com/articles/boomerang-employee" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">smart rehires</a>. Sharing: someone in a business owner group I’m told us she recently hired back a star who had left seeking greener pastures. When the employee asked to come back, they hired her without hesitation. Not only is she rocking it, but she spent her team meeting back telling everyone that if anyone was thinking of leaving, talk with her first—and she’d tell them how not so green that other grass was. Love it!</li>

</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-19"><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We’ve got a lot of expert marketers out there, and there are a handful of rockstar Office Managers (*cough cough* Stacy Sarno) in the world. They both have very different roles, or so it seems.…</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our truly outstanding Office Manager, Stacy Sarno, and I realized a very interesting crossover between our roles. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But before we dive in… here’s the backstory behind this conversation. If you haven’t been </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Keeping Up with the DBE Team</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, Stacy plans all our memorable, team-building events. These events include everything from jeopardy to paddle boating to a tower-building extravaganza. Her naturally generous spirit makes her the perfect match for planning delightfully thoughtful events. Through experience, she’s found the right balance of activities for our team that add a layer of excitement to our workweek.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re a marketer, this probably strikes a chord of familiarity. How different is planning a team event from launching a marketing campaign? We both modify our plans based on results, evolving on previous observations.</span></p>
</div></div></div></div></div><div class="fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-15 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling" style="--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;" ><div class="fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap" style="max-width:1372.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% / 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% / 2 );"><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-19 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column" style="--awb-padding-top:20.996499999999997px;--awb-padding-right:21px;--awb-padding-left:21.9772px;--awb-overflow:hidden;--awb-bg-color:#006699;--awb-bg-color-hover:#006699;--awb-bg-blend:overlay;--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-border-radius:20px 20px 20px 20px;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:0%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:0%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-20" style="--awb-font-size:var(--awb-typography2-font-size);"><p><span style="font-size: var(--awb-typography2-font-size); color: #ffffff; font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);">Here’s our proposal:</span></p>

<h3 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 30; line-height: 1.26; --fontSize: 30;" data-fontsize="30" data-lineheight="37.8px"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1. Brainstorm</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Brainstorming, of course, is a first step. Taking notes seems to be Stacy’s key to this part of the process. When someone mentions a fun idea, she jots it down. Our CEO, <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Niki </span>Fielding, mentioned doing something with Plah-Doh in the winter. Six months later, there’s a set of Play-Doh sitting on every team member’s doorsteps. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taking notes also comes more discreetly such as noticing a shared trait. Our team is playfully competitive, so “Candy Name Jeopardy” was a homerun for the team.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Variety is very important. It&#8217;s fun to do the same thing, but it&#8217;s important to switch things up to keep people interested and excited.” … as Stacy has seen from her team-building planning. Once you have a few events under your belt, you can gauge how the team liked them.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, plan for any hurdles in advance. Will travel be an issue? How does hosting a game over Zoom affect the rules? It’s good to think about logistics beforehand.</span></p>
<p><b><i>Marketer’s perspective</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: This is the research phase. Who is the audience? What are they interested in? Does your platform support the types of audience you want to target? You need to know your audience in order to tailor campaigns around them. Team events should be molded to your team just like a campaign is formed to suit your audience.<br />
</span></p>
<h3 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 30; line-height: 1.26; --fontSize: 30;" data-fontsize="30" data-lineheight="37.8px"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2. Narrow Down the Ideas</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Run ideas by your team, pick 2-3 ideas for events to discuss with anyone who needs to approve what you’re planning. Once you have authorization, send a poll asking team members to rate the potential activities if more choices need to be made. Then, pick the activities that meet the best blend of criteria. </span></p>
<p><b><i>Marketer’s perspective</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: This is similar to the recommendations you give a client. It’s obvious you can’t do everything, so you have to pinpoint what is best for your audience. Ideas in a campaign are malleable, and most of the time, there are options to consider and choices to be made. Surveys and A/B tests are techniques marketers use to gather info and data to make smart choices.</span></p>
<h3 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 30; line-height: 1.26; --fontSize: 30;" data-fontsize="30" data-lineheight="37.8px"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3. Plan</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The idea has been chosen and the time has come to plan. Stacy’s got a slew of tips on getting the most out of the planning phase:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Put together an itinerary with all of the info the team/participants will need. The more info the better.”</span>
</li>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2"><span style="font-weight: 400;">When planning our team outing to Asbury Park, Stacy scheduled the day to suit the team as a whole.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2"><span style="font-weight: 400;">You have to think about where everyone is coming from (physically) and while taking everything from the time of year to weather (if you’re meeting in-person) into account..</span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Send reminders to the participants/team.”</span>
</li>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Don’t want anyone to forget about the event!</span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Always confirm reservations with vendors. You never want to show up and find out they lost your reservation.”</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re thinking about gifts for team members, try to keep up with a theme! “Since we were going to the Jersey shore, why not give a beach bag and towels for the team to use for future trips to the beach?”</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Ask for suggestions. I was not very familiar with Asbury Park so I asked local vendors for recommendations.”</span></li>
</ul>
<p><b><i>Marketer’s perspective</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">:</span> Perspective is required when thinking about campaign launches. There have been so many campaigns that have gone terribly wrong because the marketers weren’t aware or sensitive of people’s worldly, physical, cultural, etc. perspective. Remember when Coke changed its recipe? How about Harley-Davidson <i>perfume</i>? 🤦‍♀️ (If you&#8217;re interested in more brand duds, check out this book from <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/132559.Brand_Failures">Matt Haig</a>.) <span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);">So, let&#8217;s conclude research is key to making the best campaigns and team building events a success!</span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>“Zoomraderie” </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8211; (Term coined by Niki:) Almost every week for over a year, our team uses a platform (<a href="https://www.kumospace.com/">Kumospace</a></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">) that allows us to appear in a virtual space as different avatars. There is a theme for the week like, “Favorite Food” or “Favorite Cartoon Character”. Everyone shows up as their favorite at a specified time. Then, we take turns guessing who is who. There always are a couple of good surprises as you get to know your team members.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CZjwJZelNW6/"><b>Play-Doh</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; Each team member received their own set of Play-Doh to build whatever creation they wanted over a video call. We rewarded each other with superlatives like “Most Cheerful Creation” and “Best Depiction of Underwater Life”.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Jenga-Like Blocks Extravaganza</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; Each team member got a set of Jenga-like blocks. The team played over a video call to see whose tower was the last standing.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVlNGfBlTug/"><b>Cookie Decorating</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; Each team member received a cookie decorating set to decorate over a video call. We rewarded each other with superlatives like “Best DBE Spirit” and “Best Use of Kitchen Ingredients”.</span></li>

Set a moderator, then divide the group into teams for a little competitive fun! These are great with seasons/holidays.</span></li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Traditional Company Lunch</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; Sometimes it doesn’t have to be a huge hullabaloo to be fun. It could be a simple lunch to catch up with your team.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Overall, we find that the office manager in charge of team building and the marketer running campaigns share a similar devotion: people. People are the reason for the time and effort. Whether it’s making their lives easier or better with a product or making work more lighthearted and fun!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not one size fits all, but our team building activities happen to fit and strengthen us as a team. We believe business (and the world in general) is a little brighter when people are placed at the forefront. 🌞</span></p>
