Here’s our double take on what it all means.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Let’s start with the change in Google Ads Serving Policy. Prior, Google would only run </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">one</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of your company’s ads on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Now, the policy standard (or should we say double standard): they can run multiple ads on the same SERP so long as they are in different places on the page. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At first glance, this sounds like a great opportunity for advertisers to double up their visibility. Indeed, Google Ad Impressions have seen great growth in the months following the policy change. But this Impressions growth is part of a double-edged sword, because most searchers are not going to click on both of the ads on the page. Therefore, the increase in Impressions leads to a decrease in Click-Through Rate (CTR). This means advertisers have to reevaluate CTR as one of the bedrock PPC metrics in reporting as a signal of relevance of ads with target audiences, or at least recalibrate expectations for what a “good” CTR is.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moving on to the bind Google has created with Google Search Console (GSC) reporting&#8230; SEOers have long used improvements in the GSC Impressions, Clicks, CTR, and Average Position data as indicators of Organic Search optimization success.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The news that Google is now including data from AI Overviews (as part of the SERP) and AI Mode (as a separate search mode) could be initially seen as a way to gauge SAIO (Search AI Optimization) success via GSC. Until, that is, you find out the data from Organic Search, AI Overviews, and AI Mode is all being mixed together and not being presented separately. Not only is this a double cross in terms of Organic Search data transparency, but it also has the potential for double counting Impressions on the SERP with listings in both AI Overviews and the traditional search results. We are seeing a similar impact on CTR as with Google Ads and the blurring of the value of Average Position data as it now includes positions in AI Overviews and AI Mode as part of the overall average.</span></p>

As we recently covered, Google is now doing the same kind of double counting of impressions when it comes to visibility in AI Overviews and the natural Organic SERP results. It&#8217;s even worse because follow up queries in AI Overviews are being counted as new searches and, therefore, new impressions. This &#8220;</span><a href="https://www.searchenginejournal.com/explaining-the-great-decoupling-to-c-level/549902/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">decoupling</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8221; of the two metrics (Impressions and CTR) that typically were viewed equally as evidence of SEO and PPC success is forcing a rethinking of what metrics should be prioritized to demonstrate success.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I got home, I placed Herman in a bigger pot, stopped watering him so much, and put him in a low-lit corner. His patterned leaves returned to a deep green and even sprouted a second stem next to the first (Hermine).</span></p>
<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moral of the story</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">: You can’t assume you know what others need. Stay observant, ask questions, and listen.</span></p>

This is the second case lost in addition to the search antitrust monopoly. Stay tuned as the DOJ prepares remedies for both rulings.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Testing is in full swing for </span><a href="https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Google AI Mode experiment</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Labs. 🔬 As with previous Search Lab experiments, early access is given only to premium Google One subscribers and previous Labs contributors like DBE. As one of our first prompts, we asked AI Mode to provide points of differentiation between it and the other two Google AI models we look at for SAIO — Gemini and AI Overviews. Gemini is actually the AI brains behind both AI Mode and AI Overviews though they generate responses differently. Here&#8217;s a chart AI Mode created for us to show the strengths, weaknesses, and use purposes for all three. We&#8217;ll continue our research to determine if and how AI Mode impacts our SAIO strategy and keep you in the loop of new developments.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

Anthropic&#8217;s research shows &#8220;you can&#8217;t always rely on what they (the AI models) tell us about their reasoning.&#8221; Anthropic&#8217;s solution is to &#8220;work out ways to increase faithfulness&#8221; between the chain-of-thought and the response. Note: Anthropic only tested its own Claude AI models and DeepSeek models. If we wanted to be a little cynical, we could posit that Anthropic is leveraging this research to distinguish itself from DeepSeek.</span></li>

All the other trends show declines vs. last year with TikTok and Metaverse showing the biggest drops.</li>

<li>We’ve been hearing stories about how some in the executive suite/board don&#8217;t understand marketing goals and capabilities. For example, the <a href="https://youtu.be/RdsAR9l_fI4?feature=shared">Snoop Dogg ad for Solo Stove</a> was a witty awareness play. Because the ad did not derive significant revenue in <em>six weeks</em>, Solo viewed the campaign as a failure and replaced the CEO. <a href="https://contentmarketinginstitute.com/articles/solo-stove-marketing-blunders/">CMI</a> points out the failure wasn’t the revenue, but the missing CTA that could have engaged audiences and guided them down the customer journey if sales, not awareness, was the real goal.My thoughts tie into the intro. Perhaps if there were more thoughtful pauses throughout the campaign creation process, maybe they would have picked up the mistakes in marketing CTA and analysis. The story comes with two key caveats: Be careful not to creep consumers out by misusing data via AI for personalization. And remember, human oversight of AI is essential.</li>
