Social SEO is becoming increasingly important as AI platforms leverage social signals in citations and social algorithm resets are on the rise. Your content needs to be clearly labeled, so it can be found by both algorithms and people.

• Google’s got a new ROAS-based tool that suggests conversion values to help advertisers bid smarter for new customers. (You may have heard it first from our VP Marc Engelsman.) We love it because it is a reminder of an oft-overlooked metric that every marketer should be using when making budget allocations and assessing results: Life Time Value (LTV). We know it’s not always easy to get alignment on LTV data especially in today’s multi-channel universe. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least try to come up with some framework or assessment that will help guide decision-making.

• Reminder: forced indexing through Google Search Console is discouraged, according to John Mueller. Here’s why:
  • Forced indexing is not feasible for large sites with many pages.
  • Again, create good, useful content by following Google’s E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust) or DBE’s one-step-up H-E-E-A-R-T (Human, Experience, Expertise, Authority, Relevance, Trust) acronym. This will keep your content result-worthy.

• Let’s compare organic, top 10 Search Engine Result Page (SERP) URLs vs AI-powered citations overlap rates for the same queries/prompts:
  • There’s an 88% overlap between AI Overviews and top 10 organic SERP URLs beneath.
  • In AI Mode, there’s only a 12% overlap with the top 10 SERP result URLs. (This makes sense as AI Mode searches broader keywords/topics outside just the one typed by the user.)
  • What does this mean? You may be picked up by just AI Mode, AI Overviews, or just the SERP. Our best advice is to use the most popular terminology on your site and add in variations when relevant.

• What’s a T-shaped team? A team that has deep functional expertise (as represented by a T’s vertical bar) and the broad contextual understanding that allows the team to connect the dots across business functions (represented by the T’s horizontal bar). Put it together, and you get the idea behind this article “The AI era needs strategists grounded in expertise and guided by context.” Full disclosure: the author is using this foundation to make a case for agencies that are more likely to be T-shaped than in-house teams. We don’t subscribe to this notion. We do believe that the best teams — internal or external — need strategic thinking to best leverage AI to solve problems and drive success quickly.

• X is open source now, opening up its code every 4 weeks for 7 days. If you know coding and are passionate about X, you could make your mark!

• Big brands who are reacting to cultural moments the right way. My favorite from the list from Sprout Social is Dr. Pepper’s new theme song (partly because I can’t get it out of my head).

My heart was recently widened with a listen to the uplifting musical based on the people of Newfoundland who played host to 7,000 stranded travelers – Come From Away. • This article flips the coin on AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), saying only 2.1% of ChatGPT queries are related to purchasable products. AI platforms are a way people research and learn. Yes, ecommerce is an end goal, but now AEO/GEO/SAIO is an awareness play, a competitive advantage as AI platforms gain popularity. Like billboards and magazine ads, you’re putting your brand out there without full, 360-degree knowledge of how it’s working for you.

• Look up! Was that a comet? 🌠 No, not the viral 3I/Atlas comet, but Perplexity’s Comet browser. Responding to the previous bullet, more people shopping on AI is closer than you think.

• Google’s VP of Search, Elizabeth Reid, recently spoke with The Economic Times about AI, Search, SEO, and more. Here are a couple of quotes from Search Engine Roundtable’s coverage that offer perspective on how AI and Google Search complement each other:
  • “Publishers should focus on creating high-quality, detailed content that offers a unique perspective rather than shallow, manufactured content. Since users are getting quick facts from AI Overviews, they’ll click on links to go deeper, so the goal is to optimize for a great user experience on the landing page.”
  • “Liz states that LLMs and Google Search can coexist and grow together. She notes that many people use LLMs and then come to Google to fact-check the information, which contributes to overall growth in searches. Google also aims to match key features like conversational context and personalization.”

• Let’s dive into more discussions on the role of SEO for increasing brand visibility.… Search Engine Journal talked about the Experience part of E-E-A-T as an important element in building brand authority and visibility. It also notes that 34.8% of people surveyed (in its annual State of Search Survey) answered the “What are your most improved outcomes?” by saying “brand visibility had increased.” We bet this won’t be the last time you hear about this….

• • …because here’s an article from Econsultancy that reinforces both concepts above: how AI searches lead to Google searches and how your content should align accordingly and how “brand visibility is the ‘new version of ranking on page one.'”

• YouTube is continuing to dominate AI citations over other video platforms. If YouTube is in your marketing plan, make sure to optimize your videos for SEO. Tools like Google Keyword Planner and TubeBuddy can help find the best keywords.

• Meta using your chats with its AI to hypertarget ads? Sounds about right on target for a  company that makes its money from ads and data. We should go in with the mindset that nothing on Meta is truly private.

• Threads on track to exceed X usage? That’s what Similarweb is seeing.

• Did you know your site can outrank AI Overviews for position 1? In fact, it’s happening 12.4% of the time which is more than a month ago at ~2%. This could be in response to user behavior. If the user finds the link more helpful, that link may start outranking AI Overviews.

• Anthropic, creator of Claude AI, trained its AI on purchased copies of books and a federal judge ruled that it was… (drumroll 🥁) fair use! This sets a precedent for other AI companies looking to make transformative works from purchase content. However… the millions of books they pirated for training is probably not fair use, but that’s for a separate case on another day….

• X is really turning away from its old friend the hashtag. Hashtags are now banned in promoted posts.

• When a coworker threatens to quit if the coffee machine isn’t fixed, no one believes them… just like marketers don’t think TikTok will be banned. Three delayed bans are quite an optimistic sign.

For every therapist in the U.S., there are about 350 people in need of mental health support. With such an inundated system, there has to be another more attainable solution. Give an Hour started by therapists volunteering an hour of their time to support those in need. Now, they work on informing the public with wellness ambassadors and peer-to-peer groups to fill in the gaps. Learn more about them through this video or checkout their website.

As I write this, I’m sitting looking out a window, watching the tree waves in the wind through my peripherals, and wondering why I can’t spew any thoughtful words onto my screen.

• EMARKETER takes a look back at marketing trends over the past 25 years. It highlights the impact of the internet, mobile devices, and AI as a driver of industry change. When asked to look ahead 25 years, marketing leaders’ responses coalesced around three themes: 
  • connecting more with consumers, 
  • leveraging data collection to improve more effective/efficient personalized marketing, and 
  • the continued integration of AI as a tool to improve marketing performance overall. 

• UNLEASH THE KRAKEN… I mean, META AI PROFILES! 🤖 Meta will be deploying millions of generative AI profiles on all its apps. It will increase engagement and followers for users (which even if it’s artificial will make many users happy). BUT, brands should see what percentage of followers are real people before making influencer marketing deals.

• X will be focusing on entertaining content… which is a change up from Elon Musk’s original stance. Musk stated he wants platform content to be more “positive, beautiful, or informative,” so if X is in your social plan for 2025, keep that in mind.

• A couple of Google stories from last week:
  • Google AI Overviews ads (!) have been spotted on mobile searches. We knew it was only a matter of time before Google would seek to monetize AI Overviews but still – heavy sigh. We’re keeping an eye on how the ads may impact SAIO citations.
  • The Department of Justice has recommended breaking up Google’s monopoly by forcing Google to offload its Chrome browser. The potential impacts could be wide-ranging but take a deep breath as we have a long way to go before anything gets decided – like until next August and beyond.
  • We discussed the Google Core Update, BUT we have more insights on the rollout. Sites paying well-known brands to feature their brand’s affiliate content are being penalized in the rankings. Shoutout to our friend, Josh Greene, for sharing his take on the update in his newsletter for The Mather Group!

• YouTube SEO… the tactical strategy and the tools are different, but the strategy remains the same. You need to:
  • research your keywords (tools like TubeBuddy can help),
  • choose the best keyword for your channel-size, and
  • say your keyword in your video!

• Is there a Bluesky on the other side of the X tunnel? 🌤️ Many users believe there is! Following the election, over 115,000 users casser-rolled right out of X, deactivating their X accounts. Some are calling it an “Xodus.” Then, Bluesky saw daily usage skyrocket 500%, according to Simliarweb. Get more deets from Bluesky CEO, Jay Graber, in this NPR article. Read TechCrunch’s Bluesky rundown to see how they differ from X.

• Last, but not feast: here’s a dismaying survey finding published by Garner. “Only 52% of Senior Marketing Leaders Can Prove Marketing’s Value and Receive Credit For Its Contribution to Business Outcomes.” No surprise that CFOs and CEOs are the most skeptical of marketing’s value. It’s still surprising to see such a low overall perspective on marketing by company higher-ups across all disciplines. Gartner experts pointed to the need to provide deeper marketing meaning and value through visibility into performance metrics like Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), Customer Lifetime Value (LTV), Return on Investment (ROI), etc. The nice thing about digital marketing is the readily available, easily customizable, highly visible performance metric dashboards like Looker Studio.

• How do Perplexity searches differ from Google? This article could have used Google SGE examples for a more ai-pples-to-ai-pples comparison (pun courtesy of Marc Engelsman). However, you quickly see the stark (and welcome) difference of Perplexity’s ad-free environment. Time will tell if Perplexity will show ads for revenue.

• What is the top impacting factor on a person’s perception of brands on social media? Would you be surprised if I said content? A recent study by Sprout Social supports this. Content ranked over how fast the brand responds and how personalized the responses are. So whatever you post – make it worthy of your audience’s time!

• Meta introduced new AI-powered tools for the Creator Marketplace and Advantage+ creatives in ad campaigns. The improved Image Expansion feature is said to allow more natural-looking image ads on the platform. As with any new feature, please check all creatives as thoroughly as possible.

• Does B2B have to be the “boring” sibling to B2C? Liam Moroney poses this thought in MarTech. If you look at B2B with the perspective of quick sales, many opportunities for awareness and audience-building are missed. Marketing and sales are their own separate channels that require their own objectives and finesse.

• Speaking of B2B, how can you utilize AI-powered tools to find and engage the right decision makers? Ruth Stevens describes how to use Demandbase, Anteriad, and 6sense. Check it out!

• After debate between Elon Musk and the X team, they decided to decrease the impact of blocking users. If a blocked user replies to your post, you will be able to see it and report/respond to it. Andrew Hutchinson from Social Media Today has an interesting opinion as to whether it will last because some people want to be fully separated from select profiles.

When was the last time you really looked out a window?

Every time you look out a window, it’s a little different. Leaves on a tree are rearranged. Different people may be walking, running, or riding bikes. The sunlight is shining on the Earth at a slightly different angle today than yesterday. 

The point is… there’s always something new and different to appreciate. Like the window, each day, there is something new and different to appreciate. We just have to be open and present to look.

Have you ever noticed how many hats we wear day-to-day? Sibling. Partner. Friend. Coworker. Volunteer. Parent. Athlete. Musician. They all could be full-time roles if we allowed them. First, give yourself a pat on the back for handling all those roles. Then, ask yourself… how’s the balance? Don’t forget about taking time for yourself to decompress. Much of the time, you can give yourself at least 10 minutes to reset (napping, taking a walk, etc.). If not, give yourself an elongated breath.

Now that we’re a little more centered, let’s put on our digital marketing hats, shall we? 🧙🏻🧙🏽‍♂️

• Search Engine Land covers Google’s new AI model “Gemini” that is being integrated with Search, Google SGE, Bard, and Ads. The article includes snippets of an interview with Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Here’s one of the quotes we found interesting:

Pichai: “Our fundamental vision is that people come to search to experience the richness and the diversity of the web and the content ecosystem. So even though with search generative experience we can expand what we do, we’re actually designing the product in a way so that people can go explore. And I think that’s what users want. I view it as a fundamental value proposition of search, so that’d be part of our goal as we evolve the product.”

So it sounds like rather than being just an answer machine, Google is still looking to connect searchers to other websites as part of their search journey. We’ll be watching closely as this AI-driven story evolves.

• Speaking of AI (as we often do), here’s a warning about how using AI for automating prospecting emails can be counter-productive. Bottom line: whatever you are using AI for, best practice is to pay close attention to the output before releasing into the real world.

• The global advertising market is showing positive results despite the challenging year of inflation and conflict. The overall market is expected to improve in 2024, specifically around major events like the Olympics and the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.

• You may have seen these floating around LinkedIn… Collaborative articles are becoming increasingly popular (at least in my feed). Basically, a group of experts are invited to provide knowledge and insights on a general question. Anyone can view or interact with these articles. These are another great way to build up your LinkedIn thought leadership!

• The blue bird was retired last week for “X”, the “everything app”. The X may be familiar to you from Musk’s previous and continuing endeavors, including SpaceX and X.com. One thing I want to note here: it looks like Twitter isn’t going to be Twitter anymore. Yet, there are countless apps trying to take its place. It’s a classic case of wanting something you don’t have.

• From a business standpoint, Twitter’s rebrand has lots to teach us. Inc. has a great piece on that for us.

• On the topic of unhinged social media, let’s talk about the person in charge of branded social media accounts. Sure, we love a good Wendy’s roast or the relentless owl of Duolingo’s TikTok. But this relatable, human-like approach can be overdone and cross the line from relatable to offensive. We just have to know the balance for the brand. More from DigiDay.

• Was Threads just a fad? Was the launch rushed? Possibly. The Washington Post reviews Meta’s history of quick, bare-bones launches and the future possibilities of Threads.

• How can generative AI drive sales in terms of lead qualification and personalization at scale? This McKinsey article includes a roadmap of “Six ‘no regrets’ AI strategies” for pushing AI transformation for your sales and marketing teams.

• We’ve talked about the over-broadening of broad match before. With the help of AI capabilities, Google has a deeper understanding of a user’s search intent. Think With Google provides 3 of the most significant improvements they’ve made to broad match. They also make it very clear that success in search advertising still needs to be driven by smart, human marketers… *cough cough* like us…
  • To counter Google’s point, Search Engine Land reports that broad match has the lowest CTR (relevance) compared to the other match types.

• Speaking of Google Ads, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) reported better-than-expected ad revenues results for Q2. Google Search was up 5% and YouTube up 4%.

The digital world is flipping on its head. While it’s exciting, it can also be draining. Take some time to appreciate the positives in your day. These things will help us when the rest of it gets a little wacky.

• You may have heard about the TweetDeck becoming a subscriber feature and it’s true. In addition, Twitter rolled out a new version of the feature that will only be available to paying users in less than a month.

• Get out your popcorn, because this news is almost like a movie 🍿📽️🎬: Meta’s new text-based app and aspiring replacement for Twitter, Threads, is rapidly gaining popularity with over 30 million downloads in just 16 hours. Twitter (X-Corp) has threatened Meta with a cease and desist letter, accusing it of hiring dozen’s of Twitter’s ex-employees to make what they are calling a “copycat app”. • You’ve been hearing a lot from us recently about the E-E-A-T guidelines for creating “helpful content” to secure higher rankings in search results. There now is reason to engage in an integrated “digital authority management” discipline not only to gain improved rankings in regular search results but to elevate valuable brand visibility (and clicks) in conversational/generative search environments like Bard, GPT, and Bing’s Co-Pilot Chat, which provide link citations in their responses. It’s definitely a concept worth reading about, if not exploring for your brand.
