<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Testing is in full swing for </span><a href="https://blog.google/products/search/ai-mode-search/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Google AI Mode experiment</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Labs. 🔬 As with previous Search Lab experiments, early access is given only to premium Google One subscribers and previous Labs contributors like DBE. As one of our first prompts, we asked AI Mode to provide points of differentiation between it and the other two Google AI models we look at for SAIO — Gemini and AI Overviews. Gemini is actually the AI brains behind both AI Mode and AI Overviews though they generate responses differently. Here&#8217;s a chart AI Mode created for us to show the strengths, weaknesses, and use purposes for all three. We&#8217;ll continue our research to determine if and how AI Mode impacts our SAIO strategy and keep you in the loop of new developments.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

Anthropic&#8217;s research shows &#8220;you can&#8217;t always rely on what they (the AI models) tell us about their reasoning.&#8221; Anthropic&#8217;s solution is to &#8220;work out ways to increase faithfulness&#8221; between the chain-of-thought and the response. Note: Anthropic only tested its own Claude AI models and DeepSeek models. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(Note we added the emphasis on “relatively few words” and will circle back on that in a moment.) </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It has been a long-standing SEO best practice to bucket and prioritize target keywords that align with these four search intents: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Navigational – the searcher is looking for a specific website.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Informational – the searcher is looking for an answer to a specific question.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Commercial – the searcher is researching products or services.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Transactional – the searcher is looking to purchase products or services.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The optimization of content, tags, and link/social signals around the target keyword is designed to make the “relevance” connection for Google algorithms to rank the page based on how well it meets the inferred intent of the keyword usage.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over time, Google’s algorithms and layouts for its search engine results pages (SERPs) have improved their ability to quickly address the inferred intent of a search query — especially for navigational and informational searches (e.g., with featured snippets, knowledge graph panels, Google Business maps, etc). SEO best practices have evolved to gain visibility in these features in addition to the traditional organic results section.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, we have AI engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, etc. that offer users a variety of capabilities from content creation to coding, and of course, to searching. (Check out our coverage on the huge volume of searches that are now being conducted on </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2025/03/27/seo-saio-should-come-together-right-now/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI platforms</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of search queries of “relatively few words,” we now have prompts that can extend from those few words to full sentences or even to paragraphs, depending on the intent of the user/searcher.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, how do you optimize individual pages for the numerous keyword variations used when a prompt can extend to 30 words or more? The answer is you can’t.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is why our approach to Search AI Optimization (SAIO) is focused on </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">topic clusters</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> instead of keywords. One element of our SAIO optimization strategy is to provide structured content blocks on a single page that cover a range of related topical keyword variations. AI models can then select the most relevant content block for citation as they parse the intent of searchers’ prompts. Many of these lengthy prompts will most likely fall into the Commercial- and Transactional-research-intent realm, which means those citation links will bring visitors that are more inclined to take action.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your intent as a marketer is to gain visibility for and conversions from your website, you really need to leverage both SEO and SAIO strategies to address the search intents of your prospective customers, whether they are expressed with short keyword queries or longer prompts.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The same goes for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Major events like Google’s appearance on the search scene in 2000, the start of local SEO in 2006 with Google Maps, and the rise of social SEO have molded best practices today. SEO has gone through its rebellious adolescent keyword-stuffing phase and the maturation to a mobile-first mindset.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, we are witnessing the emergence of Search AI Optimization (SAIO) – AKA Generative AI Engine Optimization  (GEO) and AI Optimization (AIO). SAIO is a companion strategy to SEO that helps your website be a cited source for GenAI search responses, what we call the </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/10/24/saio-seo-glossary-of-acronyms-names-and-best-practice-terms#sairp"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“SAIRP” Search AI Response Page</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">SEO content strategy has grown in complexity and depth throughout the years. Simply mentioning a keyword in the body content, titles, and tags hasn’t been enough for a while. It needs to be supported by </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/10/24/saio-seo-glossary-of-acronyms-names-and-best-practice-terms#eeat"><span style="font-weight: 400;">EEAT</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> principles (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). Meaning: you need to make your content unique and valuable. Using AI to regurgitate facts and figures will endow your site with a facade of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">expertise</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, but is it </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">trustworthy</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">? Does it have human </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">experience</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> intertwined with it? All these add together to create the authority of your site.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With SAIO in the picture, content not only follows the EEAT principles, but it needs to be conversational. The goal is to serve answers to your audience’s GenAI conversations (searches) on a gleaming platter. If people are asking GenAI: “How can I make my fried chicken crispier?”,  a post with that question and the corresponding answer could be easily cited as a source. </span></p>
<h2 data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px" class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontSize: 35; line-height: 1.14;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How Are People Searching with GenAI?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When using traditional search, we put in a just-specific-enough search </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/10/24/saio-seo-glossary-of-acronyms-names-and-best-practice-terms#queries"><span style="font-weight: 400;">query</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to get our answer, but not overwhelm the search engine. </span></p>
<p><b>Traditional search example</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: If you are planning a trip, it would be unlikely that you would search: “flights to Puerto Rico for 2 adults and 2 kids on August 6, 2025. Include 2 window seats. I’m not a fan of Airlines A and B. Keep all seats in 2 aisles”. All this is a bit too much for a traditional search engine, so we keep it simple and we add information iteratively. You might start by searching “flights to Puerto Rico on August 6.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">GenAI prompting is a science in itself and it needs to be learned. The natural and first way to adapt to a conversational search engine is to pose a question. The second is to give a more detailed </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/10/24/saio-seo-glossary-of-acronyms-names-and-best-practice-terms#prompts"><span style="font-weight: 400;">prompt</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><b>GenAI search prompt example</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: When you need AI to help your child write an essay, you may prompt: “What are ways to improve writing skills?” Or, if you are more familiar with GenAI, you may prompt: “Give me 10 tips and examples of ways to improve writing skills explained in a way a 5th grader can understand.”</span></p>
<h2 data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px" class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontSize: 35; line-height: 1.14;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How Are People Searching For Your Brand/Topic on GenAI Platforms?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Well, this depends on your audience. Think logically. How would they find you if they were having a conversation with GenAI? </span></p>
<p><b>Example</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: If you sell vacuums, they might ask the chatbot “What are the best ways to clean a 2-story house with 5 dogs?” You could then write a blog post on efficient ways to clean up after dogs at home to align with that prompt. (We’ll get to how you can do that below.)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Have a few conversations with GenAI yourself. You could even ask “What are some popular questions about [insert topic of expertise]?” In this example, I asked a GenAI platform: “Could you give me popular questions people ask about cleaning after dogs indoors?” From there it gave me a list of questions that I could answer in a SAIO page….</span></p>
<h2 data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px" class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontSize: 35; line-height: 1.14;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How to Set Up Your Website with SAIO Content</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An </span><a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/10/24/saio-seo-glossary-of-acronyms-names-and-best-practice-terms#faqs"><span style="font-weight: 400;">FAQ</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> framework is a great way to start with SAIO. You would write a blog or page in a way that your audience may ask questions.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In some ways yes, and other ways no.</span></p>
<h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14; font-size: 35px;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In what ways are SERPs with AI Overviews the same as those we saw for SGE?</span></h2>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most importantly, from a SAIO perspective, AI Overviews responses still include a citations “carousel” with source page images and links along with notated citations in the response where appropriate.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The AI Overviews SERPs still include Google Ads.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The AI Overviews SERPs still include natural/organic search results below the AI Overviews response.</span></li>

<h2 class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 35; line-height: 1.14; font-size: 35px;" data-fontsize="35" data-lineheight="39.9px"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In what ways are AI Overviews SERPs different from what we saw for SGE?</span></h2>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">We’re seeing fewer instances of AI Overviews being included in the SERPs. Short, generic product/service queries we’ve been testing that previously resulted in SGE Gen AI responses are </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">not</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> generating AI Overviews (including tests on queries run just last week before the launch). This aligns with previous reports from </span><a href="https://searchengineland.com/google-search-results-without-sge-jump-440369"><span style="font-weight: 400;">BrightEdge</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> earlier this month that search results did not include a Gen AI response 65% of the time. It also aligns with what Reid said in her blog that with the custom Gemini model “AI Overviews will help with increasingly complex questions.”</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Note: a SERP without AI Overviews means traditional SEO results continue to be shown in the positions they were in the past.</span></li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">We’re seeing more instances of the “From sources across the web” SERP feature. This feature provides more detailed information snippets on specific subtopics of the original search with links to the sources. Here’s an example of this feature from a search we conducted on “benefits of meditation”:</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many people who are unhappy with AI Overviews have been told there is no easy way to turn them off. But, in our testing of AI Overviews, we’ve come up with a possible work-around: </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

We’re not guaranteeing this work-around will stand the test of time but it’s worth a try for now. You could also try using the Web filter button we highlighted in this week’s <a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2024/05/22/ai-overviews-perplexity-daily-digest-cookies-and-bad-ads">Perceptive Marketer</a>. Yes, Google&#8217;s share is down a tad since 2021…and, yes, Microsoft and Apple are on the upticks,&#8230;BUT Google still captures ~70% of the search spend. So to paraphrase a lotto motto, you still gotta be in it to win it.</li>
